Lit. of Comics Week 13 / the future of comics

Week13: Freak angels In my country, most of the comic’s industry moves with webcomics market as a center because it is so popular among young people. We have a bunch of huge company and author for only webcomics. Sometimes it becomes movie or drama or musical. People access webcomics easier than book comics by their phone or laptop and as people know, it is more economical than paper and pen. I’m sure this is one of great asset and definitely, webcomic market has strong potential. But the flaw is most of comics are weekly serial comics so it was hard to know every story of “Freak Angels”. This comic is started in 2008, so, unfortunately, I couldn’t read all. But the Apocalyptic style was good also I felt steampunk style. The story is about some people who help society with their special abilities like telepathy, pyrokinesis. People called them “Freakangels”. The background is can be depressing but the contents are really interesting and give some subject to think about “Human”.

class NOV.13 / Ms. Marvel vol.1,2 (week 12)

Week12: Ms. Marvel vol.1,2 1. What is your reaction to the text you just read? Really nice. This comic book is dealing with Teenagers and cultural problems...by setting the main character as Pakistan girl. It is important and serious subject can't see lightly and I think comics are a really good method to access the problem. Because comics have a friendly image of many people. This is a problem really exist in today and this is a daily-life to someone so it needs to be visualized as many as possible. 2.What connection did you make with the story? Discuss the elements of the work with which you were able to connect. As everyone knows, we need more hero who represents minorities in society. Especially in my case, I need more woman hero because I don't have any role model as a hero until I grown up. So I can surely Ms. Marvel have some connection with me. I could emphasize her emotion and a way of thinking when she has trouble with family, friends, society. Because of cou

Lit. of Comics Week 11 / comics as contemporary literature

Week 11: Tale of One Bad Rat / Alice in Sunderland At this week, I think comics of the list have a pretty heavy mood. In the first work, a lonely homeless girl is the main character and the story is what happened to her and past memories. I feel it a little bit similar to “The Blanket”. Two both character had bad childhood memories and they suffered continued into an adult. The story flows with their emotion and mental image as the center and some time author express it by illusion. Also, they both have a symbol of trauma like a rat or a blanket. But the different thing is the boy of “The blanket” get many friends who can help him at the end. In another aspect, the author of “Tale of One Bad Rat” depict facial express greatly. I can feel a stream of her emotion only by face illustration.  In the second, actually, it was quite abstract to me so I can’t sure what I understood is correct. The main story is having a study of Lewis Carroll and Sunderland. There are a bunch of imaginat

Lit. of Comics Week 10 / manga and the japanese comics tradition

Battle Angel Alita “Last Order” Globally many people love Manga, the Japanese comics and it includes my family. I’ve lived in the country beside of Japan so I don’t think it is weird, also Anime and Manga have different strong charming to compare with US comics and animation. I knew Battle Angel is famous and the story mood is quite serious and the story represents about the pain of war. Many cyborg style manga of 20th century describe the war and have a negative view of next century. So I though Battle Angel also have same contents and I didn’t read it. Because I’m already read Ghost in the Shell, Evangelion, The Galaxy Express 999. So it was good chance to read. I really wondered why 20th centuries Japan made a lot of dystopia work. I heard that is the scar from II World war. They felt destroy of daily, family, country, people’s hope and they express the feelings through artistic work. “The Last Order” is the last series of Battle Angel, I couldn’t understand

Lit. of Comics Week 9 / A wide world of comics

MOXNOX- Joan Cornella This book is… something uncomfortable collection of gag illustration. Vivid color, lovely smiled characters, simple cartoon style but contents is really cruel and terrible. I couldn’t get some clear thinking about this illustrator. Is it satirical cartoon? Or just he is naïve? So I need to find some explanation about his work but surprisingly there are not certain comments of Joan himself except he just inspired by advertisements. People accept his work by various view perspective. It means, there are still criticism war between reviewer. Some of them claim it is just Joan’s ghoulish attracting public attention. Actually he got a lot of attention from SNS. Fashionable and visible painting style, a stimulant content are support to their opinion enough. But some of them contend this is black comedy toward society and represent people’s inner disgusting side. Personally I got bad feelings from his work I want to take the latter side. His illustration attacks m

Lit. of Comics Week 8 / Stereotype and the ethics of representation

What is your opinion about the use of stereotype in comics, animation and gaming narrative? Is stereotyping ultimately a necessary strategy in character design and representation?  Do you think you have personally been affected by stereotypical representations? What is your opinion about the use of stereotype in comics, animation and gaming narrative? Is stereotyping ultimately a necessary strategy in character design and representation?  Do you think you have personally been affected by stereotypical representations? Personally, I have optimistic view of using stereotype but if it affects harmful to specific people, I strongly think it has to be changed. There are many meaning about “Stereotype”, for example like a Specific view of general people, an Average image of something or Bias. People have a general image when they special object and it makes. Depending on how many people know and the way of how people accept, the form has clear shape and it can be changed.  Gener

Lit. of Comics Week 7/ Maus

 I read once this book when I was in high school with watching film named “The boy in the striped pajamas”,” Life is beautiful” and book named “The Diary of Anne Frank”. I am sure most of the people on earth know about the Holocaust. As one of them, I am educated about Nazi too. “Maus” is written by Art Spiegelman but the main character is his parents and another family who suffered from Nazi. Before I start, I really cared about choosing a word and I don’t want to describe this tragic by the wrong way so I hope your patient and understand if I do a mistake. “Maus” is cross directed by 2 types of time. Past and Present. And the story is separated 2 parts. In the first story, Vladek avoids Nazi at Poland with his family, and in the second part, he goes through Auschwitz. For an escape from Nazi, he offers everything he had and in the cold jail, he did everything that he can do for surviving. He lost most of his family by improper reasons like old age or have too many children. The tragi
