MOXNOX- Joan Cornella

This book is… something uncomfortable collection of gag illustration.
Vivid color, lovely smiled characters, simple cartoon style but contents is really cruel and terrible. I couldn’t get some clear thinking about this illustrator. Is it satirical cartoon? Or just he is naïve? So I need to find some explanation about his work but surprisingly there are not certain comments of Joan himself except he just inspired by advertisements. People accept his work by various view perspective. It means, there are still criticism war between reviewer. Some of them claim it is just Joan’s ghoulish attracting public attention. Actually he got a lot of attention from SNS. Fashionable and visible painting style, a stimulant content are support to their opinion enough. But some of them contend this is black comedy toward society and represent people’s inner disgusting side. Personally I got bad feelings from his work I want to take the latter side. His illustration attacks many the weak of society like children, women, old people, LGBT, black peoples, homeless...

I don’t like his style because it looks so mad and it can trigger the people’s bad memory or feelings. If many people love his style and many drawings be created looks like his work, it definitely hurt the people. I know this world can’t be always beautiful but we know we have many other ways to express this problem and we have to know about reasonability and how to create responsible work.

Lit. of Comics Week 7/ Maus

 I read once this book when I was in high school with watching film named “The boy in the striped pajamas”,” Life is beautiful” and book named “The Diary of Anne Frank”. I am sure most of the people on earth know about the Holocaust. As one of them, I am educated about Nazi too. “Maus” is written by Art Spiegelman but the main character is his parents and another family who suffered from Nazi. Before I start, I really cared about choosing a word and I don’t want to describe this tragic by the wrong way so I hope your patient and understand if I do a mistake. “Maus” is cross directed by 2 types of time. Past and Present. And the story is separated 2 parts. In the first story, Vladek avoids Nazi at Poland with his family, and in the second part, he goes through Auschwitz. For an escape from Nazi, he offers everything he had and in the cold jail, he did everything that he can do for surviving. “The Arrived by Shaun Tan” is a story about one man who leaves to a city for his family. It is famous as unique visual and impresses storytelling, however, surprisingly Characters of this book never use a word. As I search for this work, I recalled film work like Tom and Jerry, Charlie Chaplin and Mickey Mouse. Even those works do not use word, the audience can know what they want and feel. But how people can understand the story without a word? I think it because of Body language communication. When we talk with someone, “word” is not the only way for communication. We read by his facial expression, acting, and gestures. For example, when we read the condition of babies and animals, we know what they want by body act. In the same way, this book makes an easy way for reading communication between characters by expressing like a storyboard.
